Dylan was a victim of a unique gene therapy clinic, one that would not liquidate subjects, but instead test mysterious concoctions on live specimens. When he was administered a powerful dose of something called "Muton Adrenaline," he took his chance and broke free from his restraints, escaped the facility, and sought out anyone willing to fight ADVENT.

Alright. First things first. I haven't been using these things since it's only really mandatory if you're out in the field, working with Tygan in the labs, or as an engineer somewhere, but the soldiers that go out in the field say listening over the tapes every once in a while can help you remember what you're fighting for and what everyone here is together for. Fighting the aliens. Right. We'll see how much it helps later. Hopefully. ... I haven't been assigned to any missions yet. Others have gone out a dozen times and are even practicing with these new "mag" weapons, but I haven't been sent out once. They say it's to keep a reserve troop ready in case there's a larger battle, or in case the aliens find the Avenger and they try to board it or something. It all sounds a little like horseshit to me. Then again, I really shouldn't complain. I've seen what can happen out there... Plasma burns look horrible, and they smell worse. Practically melts the flesh from your bones. Mangled limbs, severe poisoning, mind warping abominations. It seems like nothing is too low for those Advent scum. I hope we get to see less casualties in the future. We've already got a few faces hanging on the wall in the memorial room. Rest in peace, those brave souls. ... I don't know. If I'm called up to board the Firebrand, I'll go. I'll fight for humanity. I'll fight tooth and nail. I have to. We have to. Because if we don't stand up for humanity, who will? ... I've seen what they can do, first hand. I won't let that keep happening. Not if I can help it..." click End Log: Date: May 10, 2035 Time: 4:29 PM

Personal Logs: Identity: Dylan Pickard Date: May 25, 2035 Time: 6:37 PM "Well, things are finally picking up around here. I've been entered into the tactics school to help me prepare for the battlefield. It's really hard work. The miles on the treadmills don't stop and if I'm not in peak condition, they keep telling me that they'll throw me off the Avenger somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic. They wouldn't do that, right? Anyways, it's a lot of pressure being asked to work this much. Then again, my life's not at stake like some of the soldiers that go out in the field. At least, not yet it isn't. ... I think my favorite thing about going to the GTS is they're finally trying to teach me how best to hold one of these mag rifles. Not too stiff, or your shoulder's gonna feel the kick for weeks, not too slack or you'll find the thing slipping out of your hands faster than you can say Mississippi. With the right grip, I've been able to track several targets at once, and land hits on at least two of 'em in the span of a few seconds. That's what I'm here for, though. To put my crosshairs on the heads of Advent and pull the trigger. ... It's exciting. To be apart of something this important. And it scares the ever living hell out of me. One wrong move and I'll be the one coming home on a stretcher. Or in a bag... But I can't let myself think like that. I can't let anything weigh me down when I finally get out there with a squad. It's exactly like the drill sergeant preaches every day. One mistake could not just mean my life, but someone else's. And I wouldn't be able to take that. I can't let something like that happen. It's us or them. ... When the time comes, I'll make sure it's them. Signing off." *click* End Log: Date: May 25, 2035 Time: 7:01 PM

Personal Logs: Identity: Dylan Pickard Date: May 29, 2035 Time: 5:00 PM "Hell yes. I'm ready. I got out of the tactics school today. There wasn't any graduation ceremonies or anything, but they do like to hand out a neat little pin-on button to everyone who passes the class. This means I'm gonna be able to go out on missions. Shoot aliens! Be a hero! Or don't do that. Sergeant said that no matter what, listen to the orders coming through the earpiece that we have to wear in the field. I'm not the one with aerial surveillance, and anything I decide to do on my own could get someone killed. The commander is someone who's been fighting the aliens for years. Ever since they first touched down on earth, even. Everything he says to do, we have to obey. If we listen well and do the dirty work right, it should all come out fine and dandy in the end. I hope he's right. ... We had to open up a spot in the morgue a few days ago. The field reports say Kolpi's rope got stuck in a tree and they had to cut her line off so Firebrand could make an evac. A damn sad way to die for a woman so brave. ... I'll have to remember to lube up my deployment chord before every mission. We learn from our mistakes here. The aliens are out there evolving, and so will we. Crack down on every little detail. I don't know when I'm gonna be called up, but I'm waiting... eagerly. I've been here since the Avenger first got lifted off the ground. I'll make sure I'm here when Advent's dead and gone and the Avenger is put up as a memorial to the proud few we lost in the fight and the helpless many that suffered at Advent's hands behind locked doors and sound-proof walls. ... I guess it's up to us to break down those doors. Well, I'm ready. I'll check in the next time something big happens." *click* End Log: Date: May 29, 2035 Time: 5:22 PM

I'm to report to the landing pad for immediate deployment. Uh... Let's see. Clean glasses... uh... check... Lucky $2 bill... check... uh... fully clothed... uh huh... Alright. I'll pick up a rifle and armor at the landing pad. Oh! Extra hair ties, just in case. Of course. The last thing I need is to be eating my own hair as I try to pull the trigger on a sectoid. Ok ok ok ok ok... Alright. No time for anything else and no time for motivational shit. I gotta get up there or they'll have my ass for delaying the mission. Huh?" *Indistinguishable banter* "Right. Thanks Ulbrecht. Real encouraging. 'Famous last words,' my ass. ... If I do need some last words, let them be... First, I leave all of my possessions, *whispering* including my booze stash that's under my mattress, *speaking up again* to Ulbrecht for having this wonderful idea, and second: 'If I fall in battle, make sure Advent falls with me, so I can keep fucking 'em up in Hell.' Personal Logs: Identity: Dylan Pickard Date: June 2, 2035 Time: 6:30 PM "Just returned from my first mission. Didn't need those last words, but someone else did. It's more than a little sobering to see someone go down like that. I hardly even knew Zoe. One moment she was hugging the cliffside for cover, the next she had a fist-sized hole in her chest where her heart should have been. It was ugly... I'm happy it wasn't me, atleast. ... We deployed in the middle of the forest, maybe just a hundred yards off of the supply train that was stopped in the area. We took some time to set up behind some trees and a piece of sheer cliffside before we engaged with a muton and some Advent troops. Seeing one of those aliens up close explains why having some of their adrenaline pumped into my veins let me escape that damned clinic facility. Mutons are mean. It just refused to die for the longest time. It wasn't until the commander ordered me in a stone-cold tone to run up to that damn thing and shove the last of my clip into its brains that it went down. They weren't joking when they said the commander could tell us to do the craziest of things. I was lucky that the gunslinger was a bad shot. I'm glad I was able to perform when it was needed. It really was thanks to McKinsley, though, that we survived the encounter I think. She moved through the cover of night like a shadow, at least until she took a shot, then she painted the forest with alien guts. It was a spectacle to watch her work. No wonder everyone's afraid to piss her off. ... Once we established a foothold on the cliffs overwatching the train, it was simple to clean up the remnants of the Advent forces guarding the supplies. ... I was shaky at the start of the mission. Missed a few shots that I wish I could have nailed. After I killed that muton, though, I had a clear head. I had just ended my first alien life, and it... left an impact on me. I won't say it was fun, because I'm sure Tygan will want to do a psych eval on me for that, but it was... inspiring. All that time in training was put to use, and I finally was able to earn my place here. On the squad. On the ship. I'm a little drained after all that. I'm gonna hit the bar, and give another toast for Zoe, 'cause I'm sure there's already been several. I think I'm... looking forward to my next mission." **click** End Log: Date: June 2, 2035 Time: 6:55 PM

Personal Logs: Identity: Dylan Pickard Date: June 30, 2035 Time: 5:01 PM "Well, it's been a while. We all got over Zoe pretty quick. That the way things roll on the ship. If we stopped and had a month of mourning for our friends every time someone passed, it would be great for morale, but the aliens would jump ahead of us immediately. No rest for the weary. Or the wicked... I love that song. ... Tygan decided a psych eval after that first mission was in order. That's why I've been benched for the entirety of this month, it seems. I don't know why, since a lot of the other missions go way worse. Today, Tracer came back looking like swiss cheese, (alive fortunately, I wouldn't be making light of it if it was fatal) and those folks are celebrating the supplies they captured in the bar. (Those guys are lucky. They found some old wines in a crate that some official must have ordered.) Must just be because I'm new and can't be trusted to carry things out perfectly like the more senior members can. That's fine. I'll work my way to the top eventually. And here I was, thinking that climbing corporate ladders would have ended in an alien invasion. No such luck. ... Missy seems nice. She's better at her job than me, so I've been following her to the firing range to try and gleam any sort of wisdom I can from her. It's difficult, trying to match up with the vets on the ship. So many of them have this look in their eyes. Like they are driven strictly by the eradication of aliens. A lot of them chill out once they hit the bar or the gym, but the fire of xenocide just doesn't leave some peoples' eyes. McKinsley's one of those kinds of people. Hawk is also kinda like that. I dunno. I just think that living life today should be just as important as fighting for tomorrow's future. ... I think I'll bring this up with Missy the next time I get to talk to her." **click** End Log: Date: June 30, 2035 Time: 5:24 PM

Personal Logs: Identity: Dylan Pickard Date: July 7, 2035 Time: 1:20 PM "Alright. We've been contacted by the Council. We've been given an opportunity to hit Advent hard and get some serious info on their troop movements and research, and even rescue a scientist contact while we're at it. All this so soon after robbing that blacksite of their mysterious yellow goo. No one really knows what it is, but if Advent was willing to set up an entire security system to guard it, we know that it's valuable enough for us to want to take it from them. I know this is my chance. I can prove myself on this mission and show that I'm not just another one of the recruits and green horns anymore. ... My name was just called up to go on active duty for this mission and I'm ready. This will be my first time suiting up in the predator armor. Seems like the soldiers going on this one are all pretty green. I guess I'll have to step it up. It should be easy enough to shine in this crowd. I just hope that everyone can pull enough of their weight that no one gets hurt. ... ... I'm finishing this log on a mobile device while everyone is getting suited up. It seems I got some of the more advanced tech to use for this mission. The commander gave me a little bit of a briefing and I'm supposed to be on the front lines. Looks like a lot of weight is gonna be on my shoulders. I won't let the commander down. Not on my second mission here. Alright, alright, alright. ... About this thing I'm talking into. It's like a cell phone, but its sole purpose is pretty much just to talk into and playback messages. Some of the specialists have managed to program things like minesweeper and snake into them, but I'd rather not mess with it too much. They issue it as part of the standard equipment in case any sort of message needs to be logged while in the field and there's no direct link to central. I got mine just after my first mission. It's good to have. There's a slot in the armor that it slides into for storage so that it doesn't get destroyed by stray gunfire. At least it's way better than trying to stand around next to a terminal here on the avenger anytime I want to log my thoughts. Huh? Oh. We're about to head out. Ok. Personal Logs: Identity: Dylan Pickard Date: July 8, 2035 Time: 3:00 PM "Fuck. I fucked up. Just... Breathe. ... We failed that last mission. We failed it, and I'm the one who fucked it up. The truck containing our VIP was set on fire just as we finished gunning down some Advent troops guarding it. The commander said it was due to the volleys of mag weapon fire that a stray shot was bound to hit it, but I saw the shot that I took to kill the nearby trooper hit a fuel line or something on that truck. I have no idea how Advent builds their prison vehicles, but they must rig the damn things to blow the moment they take any damage. I should have been more precise. That SHOULDN'T have happened. But it fuckin' did. I'm not getting reprimanded for it. I've talked with my squadmates that went on the mission with me, and they just said it was dumb luck, but I can't help but feel otherwise. ... After that, I just felt awful. I don't know what came over me. What I do know is when Sami started firing through a wall 'cause he heard something big coming through, I knew I at least wasn't going to let someone on our squad get hurt. Not while I had any chance of stopping it. I ran as far as I could, and as I started lining my rifle up to that "archon" or whatever it was, the world seemed to stop around me. I heard the wind blowing. I felt the rain dropping onto my face. I knew that I was alive, and as I pulled the trigger, I knew that thing was dead. ... Even if I fuck up some things, I've still got a job to do here. And I guess that's why I got a promotion. No one on the ship's even seen an archon before, and it was a shock to the others in the field. Everyone was apparently equally shocked when it dropped in an instant. ... I'm also gonna start tinkering with my armor from here on. I figure if I start padding it up really well, I'll be able to lock my joints if I need to and fire away a little more reliably. Not to mention that it'll help with deflecting shrapnel and the like. Alright. I'm filing this one in... Damn. I will do better." **click** End Log: Date: July 8, 2035 Time: 3:44 PM

It's an accolade showing my superiority and experience over the rookies on this ship and anyone below my rank. But it also means that I'm a role model for every person below me in rank. That they should follow my lead. That's scary. That all of my mistakes are being looked up to by everyone on my ship, not just the Commander and the combat review team. It's like living under a microscope, or on some kind of TV show. The pressure can be-" **blaring alarms screech across the ship** "All able soldiers, report to combat stations. All able soldiers, report to combat stations immediately. This is not a drill." starts repeating over the intercom. **sound of footsteps running past can be heard** "What the hell? Yo, Hawk, what's happening?" "Sounds like the aliens are catching up to us. Hunter UFO is trying to ground us permanently. We are to suit up and await further orders. Move it!" "Shit. I'll log my feelings later. Out of a frying pan and into a fucking oven." **click** End Log: Date: July 11, 2035 Time: 6:18 PM
Personal Logs: Identity: Dylan Pickard Date: July 12, 2035 Time: 12:50 AM "The Avenger's systems were disabled. They had this weird alien tech that kept pulsing and emitting strange signals that made a majority of our onboard systems go haywire. Central only sent so many troops out at one time, wanting to avoid overburdening the Commander's ability to give orders, but he still sent several of us out after the first wave to make sure we didn't lose a grip on the situation. I got sent out, but I honestly think the job was done by the time I was chosen. There were corpses all over the ground and still more weird alien tech. Apparently it was the corpse or whatever remains of something called a "Codex." I told Ulbrecht he should sue for copyright infringement. He got a chuckle out of that. ... Once I was in the field, most of what was left was just sweeping the fields and working our way up to the device. It was easy enough. Advent wanted to keep on the pressure, but their drop troops really just died like cannon fodder. Our high ground gave us almost complete control of the zone. Retreat was a little more dangerous as the drops started getting more frequent and contained more troops, but we managed to get out without anyone taking a shot. Damn good work out there. We're back in the air again and I don't know that the bar has been more crowded. Heh. "A flawless victory" the commander said. Personal Logs: Identity: Dylan Pickard Date: July 27, 2035 Time: 3:00 AM "Hey. It's me. We just touched down at HQ for a pit stop. It's been a couple weeks since the last time I used this thing. I've been pretty busy since the aliens tried to hijack the Avenger. Heh. Taught them a damn good lesson. I haven't been assigned any new missions since then. I suppose that's alright. My hide isn't being risked so immediately this way. Instead I've been given a few stations on the Avenger which help keep things running smoothly while the commander and the rest of them keep fighting the immediate battles. ... I'm mostly posted in the GTS as a trainer and tutor for the new recruits. They make a lot of basic mistakes. Mishandling their weapons, forgetting to check their corners, running in without taking cover. Lots of easy shit that will get you killed if you forget it. I've been given a couple of other tasks too, like kitchen duty and helping in engineering. Neither of those jobs really went too well, though. My time in the kitchen was really only for a day. They decided that my egg, bacon, and broccoli protein shakes were "worse than the taste of sectoid guts," to quote Looney exactly. And in Engineering I may have caused a short circuit on the ship that prevented any hot water from running for about an hour. I may have. Definitely could have been anyone. I'll just stick to tutoring my pupils. ... I heard word that things are getting tougher out there. Codexes. Codecies? Oxicodones? Codexes are running around now, literally multiplying in front of people, looking like they came straight from tron. Even a Viper King. Damn thing is scary. Quick as lightning and just generally nasty. Some days I feel ready to get back out there. Others I'm happy to stay on the sidelines. I dunno. Commander definitely likes his favorites for now. That's good enough for me. ... Been chatting a bit more with Missy recently. She says her name is just an alias the resistance assigned her to prevent her from being found and recognized by Advent. Apparently a bad history with the aliens is something we have in common. Then again, I suppose everyone on this ship has that history, one way or another. She's fun to talk with, and she says she feels the same pressure in the field, trying to land as many shots as possible on every alien she sees. I'm glad I'm not the only one here willing to admit that this shit is hard sometimes. ... Anyways. I'm signing off." **click** End Log: Date: July 27, 2035 Time: 3:42 AM

He's a little... quirky... with his predator outfit, but he says it helps him "get into character." If getting into character is what you need to do to be able to blow the head off a Viper King, I need to do more cosplays in the field. He's being heralded as the King Killer and the chants going on in the bar, "The king is dead! Long live the king!" can be heard all across the ship. Needless to say, Tygan has lodged some complaints about the noise, but those are being ignored for the next few hours I think. ... That man is my idol. Everything I've learned, I've learned by example, and I'm damn glad that I've got such a great shot to follow. The only bad thing about it is that the rest of us kinda dull in comparison with the veterans. That's fine though. They're the ones risking their hides basically every week. ... Most of the squad that went out is pretty beat up. Some severe poisoning, some serious bullet holes, but everyone came back in one piece, and that's what matters. I know there's still got to be more monsters lurking out there in the darkest shadows of Advent, but I think all of the aliens shuddered a little bit when some of their royalty got to taste some good old earthling dust." *click* End Log: Date: August 7, 2035 Time: 12:08 PM

Personal Logs: Identity: Dylan Pickard Date: November 1, 2035 Time: 8:00 PM "I'm back in action. It's not really a good thing, unfortunately. It's because the vets keep getting picked off every few missions. It's not uncommon now to hear that someone couldn't make it back. That means our veteran crew is getting smaller and is getting taken out more often. They can't always handle that as we expand our squad sizes. So, a bunch of us got to show off what the rest of the Avenger's troops can do. Advent may have messed with the best, but they can't handle the rest. ... I'm sitting here in the AWC getting this plasma burn healed up. The armor took most of the blast, but the damn sectoid managed to land a shot in between a couple plates and melt some flesh. In the field, plasma wounds are kinda better than mag weapons in small doses. The melted flesh binds with the armor when it cools, making it easy to scab up and stop the bleeding. However, I have to sit here a few days as they try to remove all the dead flesh and let it heal. ... It's nowhere near the worst you can deal with. It's definitely not a hit to the head or something. I'm glad to be back in action, but I'll be happier if it's just because we're experimenting with new squad make-ups, rather than because we just have no better options." **click** End Log: Date: November 1, 2035 Time: 8:26 PM

Sure, we may have encountered death-ball things that look like they could come straight out of a War of the Worlds film, but we took 'em out lickedy split. I got fitted with armor that fit much more loosely this time around and could stop and move a lot more easily. Made moving and shooting a piece of cake, and meant that a majority of my shots were right on the money. I think the commander was pleased with my performance today. ... 'Soochik' or however you say his name barely managed to get on board the firebrand before he bled out. Took a nasty hit from a MEC. Lucky thing. I swear their targeting AI must be run with some kind of random number generator. Their accuracy is garbage most days, but any time we're having a good day and a mission's going well, one just loves to step in and make sure nothing moves within its field of vision without taking a mag shot to the head. The good news is that he's stable in the AWC now. I'm glad. I don't want to have to write a casualty into my report. ... I guess once they ran out of recruits for the GTS, they had no one else for me to tutor and train. I'm way more active now, and with these fancy plasma rifles, things have become much more "point-shoot-enemy's-head-explodes." It's way more my style. Or somewhere in between like the "B-C squad." Whoever we are, we're the last line of somewhat experienced soldiers that the commander likes to throw out into the field before we get to sending squaddies. I did train them, but I don't know that I don't know that even I would trust those guys with killing a psionic monster like the Gatekeeper. ... I didn't qualify for a promotion today. It's a bit frustrating. Not enough kill shots recorded in from the aerial and body cams. I know I made a lot of hits, and even finished a couple off, but I guess it's gonna take more than just taking out Advent's standard troops to get that promo. I'll have to convince the commander that I'm trusty enough to take down a sectopod next time. "Whittle them down," please. I don't wittle. I shoot, drop, destroy, and eliminate. "Whittling" is not what I'm gonna do with a plasma rifle. It definitely is amusing when the commander leaves his comms open for us. ... I know we're so successful just because the commander always has such high praise for us when we go out. I think I heard "Best Squad Ever" come from his lips? Or something like that. I'm glad to know we're doing our jobs well. Now, I'm gonna relax a bit and try to forget that I was just wearing a big suit of snake-alien-skin armor.
